Don’t Let Bad Internet Connectivity Wreck Your Trade Show Exhibit

For many trade show exhibitors, internet connectivity has become an essential part of their event presence. Whether using it simply for real-time lead capture or to enable customer demonstrations of cloud-based software solutions, exhibit staff rely on the internet to maximize the results of their trade show investment.

However, trade show venues such as convention centers and hotels pose many challenges for exhibitors’ internet connectivity.  Wi-Fi becomes extremely congested as hundreds of exhibitors deploy their own mini networks, and single-carrier cellular performance can be unreliable with tens of thousands of attendees on 4G and 5G at the same time.

While high-speed wired connections may be offered by the venue, they are often cost-prohibitive for smaller exhibitors. For example, at a June 2025 technology show in Florida, the “early-bird” discounted price for a dedicated 3 Mbps wired connection – well below the data rate required to stream one HD video feed – was nearly $3500, with a 15 Mbps connection starting at over $11,000. That cost may be a drop in the bucket for a large exhibitor with a 3000 square foot booth, but for a small exhibitor in a 10 by 10-foot space, that’s a massive expense.

Reliability at Risk

Even more importantly, though, the performance of these wired connections can also be inconsistent throughout the duration of the show. For example, at one technology trade show in Las Vegas earlier this year, an exhibitor paid over $5000 to get a dedicated 10 Mbps wired connection to their booth. However, while setting up their demonstrations, they found that they were sometimes getting only half that speed, and also suffering significant latency and packet loss that were interfering with demonstrations of their cloud-based video solutions.

Meanwhile, exhibitors trying to use their own mobile hotspots rather than venues’ official internet services often found them working great during pre-show setup, only to have their demonstrations or contact-capture systems crumble once the show opened as thousands of cellular-connected attendees swarmed the exhibit halls.

To be clear, the inability to use mobile hotspots is not because the venue’s official internet provider is trying to stop you. In fact, federal laws prohibit interfering with such equipment. It has been over a decade since a large trade show connectivity provider reached a settlement with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over allegations of intentionally blocking exhibitors’ third-party Wi-Fi hot spots at convention centers in five U.S. cities. (That settlement came just months after a major hotel chain settled with the FCC over a similar accusation at a hotel conference center in Tennessee.)

Instead, the problem is simply the nature of the trade show environment. With hundreds of exhibitors trying to use cellular data from the same carriers on the same tower – all while running Wi-Fi access points that overlap each other on the same channels – it’s not surprising that performance can become unpredictable. Even the inconsistent performance on venues’ wired networks may not be surprising, depending on the nature of the trade show. While the official providers make significant investments in building robust network infrastructures at convention centers, some particular events are almost certain to push or exceed the limits. There’s a huge difference in the total internet connectivity demands at a show like World of Concrete (which drew nearly 60,000 attendees and 1400 exhibitors) versus the tech-centric CES and NAB Show, with exhibitors at the latter two events frequently streaming high-quality video to or from the cloud.

A Bonding Router to the Rescue

Notably, the wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi from the official show service provider and your own cellular connectivity don’t need to be an either/or proposition. In fact, the ideal solution may be to combine them – and even cellular service from two different carriers – to enable fault-tolerant reliability or bolster performance.
